Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Cookie scoop or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons low-fat buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 3 tablespoons grated yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and garlic powder until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then add the low-fat buttermilk and melted butter. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  • Gently fold in the grated yellow onion and chopped green onion until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  • Using a cookie scoop or spoon, portion out the batter into small balls (about 1-2 tablespoons each) and arrange them on a plate.
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray. Place the hush puppy balls in the basket in a single layer, making sure they are not touching each other. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  • Air fry the hush puppies for 8-10 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  • Once cooked, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce, and enjoy every bite!

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, spray the hush puppies lightly with cooking spray before air frying.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • Adjust sugar to taste if you prefer a sweeter hush puppy.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the air fryer or oven at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes.
