Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Pastry Brush

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado mashed
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice from 1/2 lime
  • 0.5 teaspoon pepper freshly ground, or to taste
  • 2 sheets puff pastry 1 package
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 6 ounces mozzarella cheese cut into 12 cubes of 1 inch each
  • 0.5 cup salsa for dipping

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

  • Start by mashing the avocado in a mixing bowl. Add the lime juice and freshly ground pepper, mixing until well combined. The lime juice not only adds flavor but also helps to prevent the avocado from browning.

Step 2: Roll Out the Puff Pastry

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). If your puff pastry is not already rolled out, lightly flour your work surface and use a rolling pin to roll it out into a thin sheet. You want it to be about 1/8 inch thick for the best texture.

Step 3: Cut the Pastry

  • Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into squares that are approximately 4x4 inches. You should get about 12 squares from two sheets of pastry.

Step 4: Assemble the Puffs

  • Place a cube of mozzarella cheese in the center of each pastry square. Spoon about a tablespoon of the avocado mixture on top of the cheese. Carefully fold the pastry over to form a triangle, pressing the edges together to seal. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for an extra decorative touch.

Step 5: Brush with Egg Wash

  • Transfer the filled puffs onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a pastry brush, apply the beaten egg over the tops of the puffs. This will give them a beautiful golden color as they bake.

Step 6: Bake to Perfection

  • Bake the puffs in your preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-browning.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy!

  • Once baked, remove the puffs from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with salsa for dipping. These Avocado Mozzarella Puffs are sure to impress!

Notes

  • Store unbaked puffs in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking to save time.
  • Freeze assembled but unbaked puffs and bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to baking time.
  • Try adding diced tomatoes, cilantro, or spices like cumin for flavor variations.
  • Use vegan cheese and egg substitutes to make this recipe vegan-friendly.
  • Serve with fresh salsa or guacamole for a flavorful dip.
