Brown Butter Rice Krispies Treats Instructions
Place unsalted butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently as it melts and foams. Continue stirring until the milk solids turn golden brown and the butter has a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.
Reduce heat to low and add the entire 10-ounce bag of marshmallows to the browned butter. Stir continuously until marshmallows are completely melted and smooth.
Remove the saucepan from heat. Add 5 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and sprinkle in salt if using. Gently fold the cereal into the marshmallow mixture until evenly coated, being careful not to crush the cereal.
Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Pour the mixture into the dish and use a heat-resistant spatula to spread evenly. Press firmly to create a compact layer with no gaps.
Allow treats to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes or until set. Lift treats out using parchment paper edges and slice into squares or rectangles.
- For a more intense flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the marshmallow mixture before combining with the Rice Krispies.
- Use less Rice Krispies cereal (about 4 cups) for a chewier texture.
- Mix in extras like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit for added flavor and texture.
- Ensure butter is browned properly to achieve the distinctive nutty flavor.
- Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days or freeze up to 2 months.
