Equipment

  • Spice grinder
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Storage container
  • Dry skillet
  • Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns
  • 6 whole star anise seeds
  • 1 tablespoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  • Gather all of your spices: Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, fennel seeds, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves.
  • In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, and fennel seeds for about 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.
  • Once toasted and cooled, transfer the spices to your spice grinder. Grind until you achieve a fine powder.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the freshly ground spices with the ground cinnamon and ground cloves. Stir well to ensure an even distribution.
  • Transfer your Chinese Five Spice blend into an airtight jar. Label and date the jar, then store in a cool, dark place.

Notes

  • Use black peppercorns instead of Sichuan peppercorns for a more traditional flavor.
  • Try substituting anise seeds for star anise to mellow the licorice notes.
  • Add a pinch of ground nutmeg for a sweeter spice blend.
  • Store the blend in an airtight container away from light and humidity to maintain freshness.
  • Great for seasoning meats, stir-fries, soups, and even baked goods.
