- 2 tablespoons Sichuan peppercorns
- 6 whole star anise seeds
- 1 tablespoon fennel seeds
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
Gather all of your spices: Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, fennel seeds, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves.
In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, and fennel seeds for about 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.
Once toasted and cooled, transfer the spices to your spice grinder. Grind until you achieve a fine powder.
In a mixing bowl, combine the freshly ground spices with the ground cinnamon and ground cloves. Stir well to ensure an even distribution.
Transfer your Chinese Five Spice blend into an airtight jar. Label and date the jar, then store in a cool, dark place.
- Use black peppercorns instead of Sichuan peppercorns for a more traditional flavor.
- Try substituting anise seeds for star anise to mellow the licorice notes.
- Add a pinch of ground nutmeg for a sweeter spice blend.
- Store the blend in an airtight container away from light and humidity to maintain freshness.
- Great for seasoning meats, stir-fries, soups, and even baked goods.
