Chocolate Fudge Frosting: How It’s Done
Start by chopping the unsweetened chocolate into small pieces and placing it in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in short bursts of 15 seconds, stirring in between until smooth and completely melted. Set aside to cool slightly.
In a mixing bowl, add the unsalted butter. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until it becomes light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Pour the melted chocolate into the creamed butter. Beat on low speed until combined, ensuring the chocolate is evenly distributed throughout the butter.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed to prevent a cloud of sugar from escaping. Once combined, increase the mixer speed to medium and beat until smooth.
Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Continue to mix on medium speed until the frosting is creamy and spreadable. If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Finally, add the kosher salt and mix for another 30 seconds. Taste the frosting and adjust the sweetness or saltiness to your liking.
- Store frosting at room temperature for up to one day, or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week.
- Freeze in a sealed container for up to three months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
- Customize your frosting by adding peppermint extract, espresso powder, peanut butter, or spices for unique flavors.
