- 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves from a good handful, about 1 ounce, lightly packed; plus more for garnish
- 4 cups water
Begin by bringing 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a teapot or saucepan. Use filtered water if possible.
While the water is heating, rinse your fresh mint leaves under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Gently pat them dry with a kitchen towel.
Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from heat and add the prepared mint leaves directly into the water. Cover and let steep for about 5 to 10 minutes depending on desired flavor strength.
Carefully strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve to remove the mint leaves. For a stronger flavor, leave leaves in for a few more minutes before straining.
For hot tea, pour into a mug, garnish with additional mint leaves, and enjoy. For iced tea, cool to room temperature, refrigerate until chilled, then serve over ice with fresh mint garnish.
- Store leftover tea refrigerated up to 3 days in a sealed container.
- Freeze cooled tea in ice cube trays for long-term storage and future use.
- Add sweeteners like honey or agave syrup to taste, either during steeping or after straining.
- Try adding lemon slices or other herbs like chamomile for flavor variations.
- Always use fresh mint leaves for best flavor; avoid dried mint.
