Equipment

  • Teapot or saucepan
  • Measuring Cups
  • Strainer or fine mesh sieve
  • Pitcher (if making iced tea)
  • Optional: Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves from a good handful, about 1 ounce, lightly packed; plus more for garnish
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  • Begin by bringing 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a teapot or saucepan. Use filtered water if possible.
  • While the water is heating, rinse your fresh mint leaves under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Gently pat them dry with a kitchen towel.
  • Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from heat and add the prepared mint leaves directly into the water. Cover and let steep for about 5 to 10 minutes depending on desired flavor strength.
  • Carefully strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve to remove the mint leaves. For a stronger flavor, leave leaves in for a few more minutes before straining.
  • For hot tea, pour into a mug, garnish with additional mint leaves, and enjoy. For iced tea, cool to room temperature, refrigerate until chilled, then serve over ice with fresh mint garnish.

Notes

  • Store leftover tea refrigerated up to 3 days in a sealed container.
  • Freeze cooled tea in ice cube trays for long-term storage and future use.
  • Add sweeteners like honey or agave syrup to taste, either during steeping or after straining.
  • Try adding lemon slices or other herbs like chamomile for flavor variations.
  • Always use fresh mint leaves for best flavor; avoid dried mint.
