Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie Cutter or Knife
  • Deep fryer or large pot
  • Slotted Spoon
  • Cooling rack
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ¾ cup Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Cinnamon for sprinkling

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Whisk together until well blended.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together ¾ cup of milk, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  • Flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Roll the dough to about ¼ inch thickness using a rolling pin.
  • Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut the dough into petal shapes. Create a series of overlapping petals that will be shaped into a rose.
  • Take your cut dough pieces and overlap them slightly, rolling from one end to the other to form a rose shape. Pinch the base to secure it.
  • In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). You want enough oil to submerge the roses.
  • Carefully place the shaped roses into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried roses and drain them on a cooling rack. Once slightly cooled, dust generously with powdered sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Notes

  • Store leftover fried dough roses in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Freeze shaped dough before frying to make ahead and fry directly from frozen, adding extra cooking time.
  • For a healthier option, bake dough roses at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes instead of frying.
  • Use gluten-free flour and almond milk for dietary substitutions.
  • Monitor oil temperature carefully to avoid burnt or greasy dough roses.
