Equipment

  • Sharp serrated knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Small Bowl
  • Spoon or small brush
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf of bread preferably a round sourdough or a crusty artisan loaf
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted (1 stick)
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese optional, for a cheesy version

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the loaf of bread on a cutting board. Using a sharp serrated knife, carefully cut the bread vertically and horizontally in a crisscross pattern, making sure not to slice all the way through the bottom to keep the loaf intact.

Make the Garlic Butter

  • In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until well blended.

Assemble the Bread

  • Drizzle or brush the garlic butter mixture generously into the cuts of the bread, making sure to get it deep into the crevices. If using cheese, sprinkle it evenly between the slices now.

Bake the Bread

  • Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the bread is golden and crispy on top.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Remove from the oven and let cool for a couple of minutes. Serve warm, pulling apart the bread to enjoy the garlic butter flavor in every bite.

Notes

  • Use a serrated knife to avoid squishing the bread when slicing.
  • Distribute garlic butter evenly to ensure every piece is flavorful.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness.
  • Try variations with different herbs or add cheese for extra richness.
