Equipment

  • Large Pot
  • Large Skillet
  • Colander
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces penne pasta
  • 1 pound shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

Build Garlic Butter Shrimp Penne Step by Step

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes. Drain the pasta, reserving about ½ cup of the pasta water for later use.
  • While the pasta is cooking, pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Season lightly with salt and pepper to bring out their natural flavor.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Sauté for about 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and golden, but be careful not to burn it.
  • Add the shrimp to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque. This quick cooking ensures they stay tender and juicy.
  • Reduce the heat to low and add the cooked penne to the skillet with the shrimp and garlic butter. Pour in the fresh lemon juice and toss everything together. If the pasta seems dry, add a splash of reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce.
  • Sprinkle the chopped parsley over the pasta and stir gently. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Serve the Garlic Butter Shrimp Penne hot, topped generously with grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • Reserve some pasta water to adjust sauce consistency if needed.
  • Do not overcook shrimp to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Sauté garlic on medium heat to avoid burning and bitterness.
  • Swap penne with other pasta shapes like linguine or fettuccine for variety.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat gently.
