Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Measuring Cups
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • a pinch sea salt
  • cinnamon optional
  • nutmeg optional
  • cardamom optional
  • honey optional sweetener
  • maple syrup optional sweetener
  • apple thinly sliced
  • frozen tart cherries thawed
  • chopped almonds
  • frozen blueberries thawed
  • orange zest optional
  • Greek yogurt optional
  • chia seeds optional
  • coconut flakes optional

Instructions

  • Start by measuring out 1 cup of whole rolled oats and 1 cup of water. This will serve as your base for the oatmeal.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the measured water and oats. Add a pinch of sea salt to enhance the flavor.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Stir occasionally to prevent the oats from sticking to the bottom.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the oats simmer for about 5 minutes. Continue stirring occasionally until the oats have absorbed the water and reached your desired consistency.
  • If you’re using spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom, add them now along with honey or maple syrup if you desire some sweetness. Stir well to combine.
  • While the oatmeal is cooking, prepare your toppings. Thinly slice an apple, thaw your frozen cherries and blueberries, and chop your almonds.
  • Once your oatmeal is cooked to perfection, pour it into a bowl and top with your prepared fruits, nuts, and any optional extras like Greek yogurt, chia seeds, or coconut flakes. Enjoy your delicious bowl of oatmeal warm!

Notes

  • Don’t skip the salt to enhance the flavor of your oatmeal.
  • Adjust the water amount to achieve your preferred oatmeal texture.
  • Store leftover oatmeal in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Try holiday variations like pumpkin spice or chocolate cherry for festive flavors.
  • Use quick oats for a creamier, faster-cooking option.
