How To Make Soft Boiled Eggs
Fill a large bowl with ice and water to prepare the ice bath. Set it aside.
Fill a medium-sized pot with enough water to cover the eggs by at least an inch. Bring the water to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
Carefully lower the cold eggs into the boiling water using tongs or a slotted spoon, avoiding splashes.
Set a timer for 6 to 7 minutes depending on your yolk preference: 6 minutes for runny yolk, 7 minutes for slightly firmer yolk.
Prepare the ice bath if not already done. When the timer goes off, quickly transfer the eggs from boiling water to the ice bath.
Let the eggs sit in the ice bath for about 5 minutes to stop cooking and make peeling easier.
Gently tap the eggs on a hard surface to crack the shell, peel starting from the wider end, rinse under cool water if needed. Enjoy your soft boiled eggs!
- Use a timer to avoid overcooking which leads to hard-boiled eggs.
- Older eggs peel more easily than fresh eggs.
- Allow eggs to sit at room temperature briefly before cooking to prevent cracking.
- Store leftover soft boiled eggs in their shells in the fridge for up to two days.
- Dress up soft boiled eggs with toppings like asparagus, avocado toast, spicy sriracha, or herbed salt for extra flavor.
