Instructions

Make Ahead Biscuits Recipe

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). This high temperature is crucial for achieving that perfect biscuit rise.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat and set aside to cool.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • Using a pastry cutter or two forks, cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This step is essential for creating those flaky layers.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until just combined; be careful not to overmix.
  • Once the dough has formed, gently fold in the cooked sausage and shredded cheese. This will distribute the flavors evenly throughout the biscuits.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a rectangle about 1 inch thick. Using a floured biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Keep an eye on them, as oven times can vary!
  • Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. If you’re making them ahead, allow them to cool completely before storing.

Notes

  • Use cold butter to ensure flaky layers in your biscuits.
  • Freeze unbaked biscuits on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for easy make-ahead breakfasts.
  • Avoid overmixing the dough to prevent tough biscuits.
  • Try substituting half the all-purpose flour with whole wheat for a healthier twist.
  • Experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack or mozzarella for varied flavors.
