- 1 cup mayonnaise creamy base of the sauce
- 1 cup dill pickles finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon dill fresh or frozen, or finely chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 0.25 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 2 tablespoons onion finely chopped, optional
Start by finely chopping the dill pickles and onion (if using). The smaller the pieces, the better the texture of your tartar sauce.
In a mixing bowl, add 1 cup of mayonnaise. This will serve as the creamy foundation of your tartar sauce.
Stir in the finely chopped dill pickles and your choice of dill or parsley. This is where the sauce starts to take on that classic tartar flavor.
Add in 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper. If you opted for onion, add it now as well. Mix everything until well combined.
Give your tartar sauce a taste. If you prefer it tangier, add a bit more lemon juice. If you like it sweeter, adjust the sugar to your liking.
For the best flavor, cover the bowl and let the tartar sauce chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
- Use Greek yogurt or vegan mayonnaise for a lighter or plant-based alternative.
- Try sweet pickles, relish, or spicy pickles to vary the flavor.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
- Freezing is possible but may change texture upon thawing.
- Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to spice it up.
